Hey Oakland County residents! If you’ve gotten used to all the road works spreading across our neighborhoods, you’re in for a pleasant surprise this Labor Day weekend. Yup, you’ve got it! Most of the road projects will be hitting the pause button at 3 p.m. Friday, right ahead of the long weekend.

Don’t start celebrating just yet, though! The construction crews will be back full swing from 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3.

But why the break, you ask? Well, “Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest travel times of the year”, says Dennis Kolar, the managing director of the Road Commission for Oakland County. The reason for the pause is as simple as it sounds – to lessen traffic congestion and ensure safer, smoother holiday travel for us all. Now, that’s thoughtful, ain’t it?

But wait, there’s more! The commission is also giving a break to most heavy earth-moving equipment and other large contractor equipment movement on county roads. This again aims at making your drive smoother and safer this weekend.

However, safety being the first priority, certain roads will remain closed. Here’s a quick list:

  • County Center Drive will stay shut until mid-September
  • Dequindre Road stays closed until late November
  • Eleven Mile Road is closed until late October
  • Eastways Road will remain shut until approximately Sept. 7
  • Elizabeth Lake Road is closed until early October
  • Edgeorge Street over the Clinton River
  • Farr Street is closed until Sept. 20
  • Indianwood Road closed until early October
  • Martindale Road is set to reopen after Oct. 12
  • Martindale Road Bridge over the Novi/Lyon Drain (to be replaced in 2025)
  • Pontiac Lake Road is closed until mid-October
  • Shore Hill Drive east of Middlebelt Road is shut for a future culvert replacement phase
  • Waldon Road is off-limits until early November
