NOVI, Mich. — Voters in Novi, Michigan, will decide on Nov. 3 whether to renew a 1-mill capital improvement tax for another 10 years, and the city is holding information sessions on the question this fall.
The millage was first approved in 2016 and is set to expire. City leaders say the renewal would keep the same rate, about $1 for every $1,000 of a home’s taxable value, rather than raise it. The ballot language says the money could be used for parks and facilities, land acquisition, pathways and equipment such as fire trucks and heavy equipment, but not for operations or payroll. The city estimates it would raise $5,412,997 in its first year, beginning with the July 2027 levy.
The mayor has pointed to Bosco Fields, a splash pad and added land at ITC Community Sports Park as projects paid for with past millage money. City materials say the 2016 millage also added more than 160 acres of parkland. Future priorities include developing about 80 acres next to ITC park, fixing drainage and grading at athletic fields, improving baseball fields and replacing fire apparatus, which has grown more expensive.
The city held a session Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Lakeshore Park, and a final session is set for 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Novi Public Library. Early in-person voting runs Oct. 24 through Nov. 1 at the Novi Civic Center.
